Sound Design - Concept Research

For Dead in the Water, we want our topic to really hit home, and I aim to create a sound design around that idea. After discussing it with Lizzie, we plan to give the film some texture, so to say. When the sound is synchronous with shots of the farms, it will be very raw and unnerving, making the audience feel like they are there but don’t necessarily want to be. With the interviews of people who are affected by the waste, we plan to keep the sound very intimate and personal with some background music to match their emotions. Since Concentration swayed more to the scientific side of things, we are trying to appeal to people’s humanity. We want to implement a very rural feel to our film, and so, Lizzie has already hired a guy that will do our score. He plays a lot of acoustic music that includes guitar, drums, and keyboard. He also has a friend that plays the violin who could record some tracks for our more emotional moments. The last sound technique we plan on using is sound effects to synchronize with our animation (if we are able to incorporate that). It will have the feel of those “infographic” videos and will visually explain what a CAFO is, as well as the process of how waste gets into the air and water. I will pull free, non-copyright sound effects from the internet and pair that with music. Our goal with this is to give a simple visual to help our audience easily understand the issue. Listed below is the sound equipment we will need:
  • ·      Sound Recorder
